Highlights:
- The alliance began to use RTI as a tool to get more information on the issues of access to education and child marriage
- The alliance continued to follow up on the status of appointment of the Chairperson of the SCPCR. Eventually in the month of February, a Chairperson for SCPCR was selected and announced.
- Fact finding missions continues on key issues affecting protection of child rights like kidnapping, rape, murder, inmates of a school falling ill on a single day, illegal mining, child abuse, child marriage and attack on minor communities. 20 such missions were conducted across the state. Necessary steps and follow up actions were taken in these cases.
- Across 157 Gram Panchayaths the election advocacy on child rights was organized. This helped in sensitizing the contesting candidates at Panchayath level about the issues affecting children.
- Campaigns on the issue of malnutrition helped highlight the critical issue and its impact on young growing children.
- The alliance also met up with various political parties, submitting a charter asking parties to make child rights a priority.
IMPACT:
- The Alliance was able to ensure that 53 schools that were either closed or on the verge of closure were either reopened or continue to function.
- Various improvements in the basic infrastructure facilities in 215 schools enhanced the quality of services in those schools, thereby giving children an opportunity to have quality education and infrastructure.
- Reactivation of girls’ toilets in 133 schools resulted in preventing many girl children from dropping out of school
- Infrastructure facilities improved in 110 welfare hostels, thus impacting the living conditions of those children in the hostels.
- The fact-finding missions conducted by PVCR members brought to light various violations happening on children and sought accountability from the government in providing protection for the children. Through this, public also were sensitized on the need for protection of child rights. In addition, the offenders responsible for those violations of child rights were booked by the police.
- The publication of research study report by PVCR on the status of malnutrition among children in A.P. brought to light the prevailing malnutrition among children and the status of ICDS centres in the state. The findings of the report also brought to light that number of severe acute malnutrition cases in the state have almost doubled in the last 10 years.
- Through the election advocacy campaign the alliance personally met political parties asking them to include child rights as a priority in their manifesto. Some of the key people the alliance met included:
