Highlights:
- The Panchayats and children’s collectives started getting involved in demanding for better quality of education and infrastructure at schools.
- Press meets were orgnaized and memorandums submitted to the NCPCR (National Child ) highlighting the pathetic conditions of schools
- Across the state children began raising questions through the media, through their collectives, through memorandums being submitted to concerned officials about lack of toilets and other infrastructure, hostels in poor conditions, lack of teachers in schools.
- A South India level campaign was held on 26th Jan and a state-level consultation held, advocating for the constitution of State Child Rights Protection Commission
IMPACT
- At Vizianagaram district, when the District Collector visited Perapuram villages, children explained to him the difficulties in government school due to bad infrastructure. When children of Perampur villages in Vizianagram district spoke to the District Collector about the difficulties they face in school, he immediately took action to improvise the facilities
- Girls’ toilets in 112 schools have been reactivated in the state. These toilets had either lacked water facility or doors were not proper or its access was denied to girl students by teachers. Several hundreds of girl children benefited because of this.
- Infrastructure facilities in 343 social welfare hostels have been improved in the state. The improvements are in the areas of drinking water facility, repair of toilets and bathrooms, water facility and compound wall. One new hostel has been sanctioned at ChinnagottigalluMandal of Chittoor district. Funds were sanctioned for hostels in Adilabad district after the District Collector ordered a review of infrastructure facilities in all the hostels in the district.
- 204 schools prevented from closing
- 198 schools and 343 hostels added better infrastructure facilities
- 8 fact finding missions were conducted to highlight situation of schools.
